Overview

E. cloacae is a gram-negative bacterium that can be found in the intestines of humans and animals. Although, E. cloacae constitutes the normal flora of the human intestine, it is a pathogen that causes bacteremia, endocarditis, intra-abdominal infection, and urinary tract infection in immunocompromised individuals and surgical patients. In women, infections may occur more easily because the reproductive organs are in close proximity to the intestines. E. cloacae has a gene that encodes β-lactamase and exhibits resistance to β-lactam antibiotics, so infection should be taken with caution.
