Overview

S. pneumoniae is a gram-negative bacterium known to cause mainly pneumonia and sepsis or meningitis. S. pneumoniae is the most common cause of pneumonia spread in the community and has been actively studied since the 19th century. S. pneumoniae is an opportunistic pathogen that is present in the upper respiratory tract and represents pathology in patients with weak immune systems.
