Overview

V. furnissii is a gram-negative, basophilic bacterium that can be easily found in the ocean. In general, you can become infected by eating contaminated, undercooked seafood or being exposed to warm ocean water. When infected, symptoms include acute gastroenteritis and diarrhea. V. furnissii and V. fluvialis are very similar in phenotypic characteristics. However, V. furnissii can be distinguished from V. fluvialis by gas production due to carbohydrate fermentation and genetic sequence differences.
