Overview

A. naeslundii is a gram-positive bacterium found in the oral cavity of humans and animals. It exists in symbiosis with other bacteria and forms colonies on the surfaces of teeth and mucous membranes. A. naeslundii can ferment carbohydrates and maintain pH homeostasis, which has an advantage over other bacteria in adapting to a changing environment. It is frequently found in plaque, and when it invades the tissue, it causes periodontal disease and root caries. In addition, it can also cause actinomycosis with A. israelii.
