Overview

S. intermedius is a gram-positive bacterium that causes periodontitis, purulent infections, or endocarditis. S. intermedius is a normal bacterial flora found in the mouth, upper respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal tract, but it is a pathogen rarely found in other organs in patients who have received oral treatment. S. intermedius was classified as S. anginosus before being named. Recently, cases have also been reported that S. intermedius helps in the process of causing purulent infection by S. anginosus.
