Overview

S. mutans is a gram-positive bacterium that causes tooth decay, bacteremia, or endocarditis. S. mutans is a representative cavity bacterium that requires a hard surface to form a colony, so it cannot form a colony in infants before the primary teeth are out. S. mutans is a pathogen that requires attention because it can spread into the bloodstream and cause bacteremia through dental treatment, brushing teeth, and flossing.
