Overview

S. sanguinis is a gram-positive anaerobic coccus and is a bacterium that lives in the oral cavity of healthy people. It is mainly found in tartar and also serves to protect the tooth surface from pathogens that cause cavities. However, when it moves into the bloodstream during oral surgery, it colonizes the mitral or aortic valve and causes inflammation. This can lead to endocarditis, congestive heart failure, and related complications. When infected, treatment is complicated and requires long-term antibiotics.
