Overview

S. pyogenes is a gram-positive bacterium known to cause primarily pharyngitis and, rarely, scarlet fever or necrotizing fasciitis. S. pyogenes is the most commonly found pathogen among group A streptococcus and is transmitted from person to person through droplets and skin contact. Most cases of infection are in children with weakened immunity and occasionally cases of infection in pregnant woman in late pregnancy have been reported.
