Overview

S. epidermidis infection can be a risk for patients using surgical implants due to defective heart valves. When the infection occurs, a biofilm is formed on the implanted device. Antibiotics are rarely effective at removing the biofilm formed by S. epidermidis, and the most common method of treatment is removal or replacement of the infected device.
