Overview

E. faecium is a gram-positive bacterium mainly known to cause sepsis and, in rare cases, urinary tract infections and endocarditis. E. faecium is an enterococcus that is commonly found in intestine, oral cavity, and urethra, and is known to be highly resistant to antibiotics. It is rare to show pathogenicity in healthy people, but it is an opportunistic pathogen that causes urethral or wound infections in chronically ill patients.
