Overview

M. hominis is the bacterium that causes bacterial vaginosis, urethritis. It is present in small amounts in genitourinary system of almost everyone, so if you are in good health, this is nothing to worry about. But it does rarely cause sexually transmitted infections. It is associated with pelvic inflammatory disease, which can lead to ectopic pregnancy. If you become pregnant without healing it, it can cause miscarriage or postpartum infections. M. hominis does not have a cell wall, so antibiotics that weaken the cell wall, such as penicillin, are ineffective. Diagnosis can be made easily and accurately through a test that checks for bacteria mainly through urine.
