Overview

B. pertussis is a gram-negative bacterium known as one of the causative agents of whooping cough. B. pertussis is known to be the most active pathogen in the human body among the same genus, and has been shown to have significantly lower survival rates outside the body. Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease, and is named so as patients make a “whooping” sound when they take a deep breath after coughing. Initial symptoms are usually similar to symptoms of flu such as runny nose and fever, but as the disease progresses, it is characterized by a coughing fit.
