Overview

E. ictaluri is a gram-negative bacterium belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae that causes enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC) and recently also infects sweetfish and yellowhead catfish. Symptoms of ESC infection include chronic encephalitis, exophthalmos, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, head edema and ulceration. This infection is found in Asia and the United States and causes economic losses to the catfish farming industry, accurate disease diagnosis through PCR, bacterial culture, ELISA, etc. is required.
