Overview

S. equi is a gram-positive bacterium that is primarily pathogenic to horses. Infectious purulent abscesses are formed in the lymph nodes and mucous membranes of the cheeks. Main symptoms, such as fever, runny nose, and anorexia, appear in horses affected by the disease. S. equi is also spread through direct contact with the purulent rhinorrhea of infected horses or indirectly through contaminated water, pasture, or feed. In order to prevent the introduction of disease, it is necessary to isolate and vaccinate affected horses.
